Joffre

The Joffre (also called Kaiser), is a card game that is practiced with a 32-card game, with four players divided into two teams of two partners (North-South and East-West).

If the Joffre is often compared to bridge, due to its two-phase development (bidding and card play), it remains nevertheless that it is easier to learn to play Joffre than bridge, especially thanks to simplification, or the absence of agreements at the auction stage.

Like bridge, it takes place in two phases:

  1.  Auctions that determine the contract to be played by the winning team;
  2. the card game during which the reporting team tries to achieve at least the number of points announced in the contract.

If the names Joffre and Kaiser recall the First World War, the origins of the game are still unknown. It seems that gambling was introduced in Quebec during the last century.

The game is more specifically played in the Bellechasse region of the South Shore of Quebec City.
